 JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE POSITION OF COUNSELOR

Position: General Counselor (All counselors are general counselors. In addition, a counselor may be designated as a Unit Head or Activity Head.)

Qualifications:

  • Is 19 years of age and/or has completed the first year of college or the equivalent. Preferably meets both qualifications.

Responsible to:

  • As a cabin counselor: to the Unit Head and Camp Directors.

  • As activity counselor: to the Activity Head, Program Director and Camp Directors.

General Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible for a cabin group of 3-7, generally 4-5, campers.

  • Is responsible for the teaching or assisting in one or more activities in which she has some degree of talent, training, and/or experience.

Specific Responsibilities:

As a cabin/unit counselor:

  • To share time with and supervise those campers in her cabin during cabin clean-up (after breakfast until 9:15am), rest hour, bed-time and during the night from 12:15am until 8:00am. (Exceptions: during trips which the counselor is leading and during her 12 and 24 hour days offs and nights off.)

  • To supervise and inspect unit maintenance performed by campers, as delegated by the Unit Head.

  • To plan, organize, and/or supervise special unit activities as delegated by the Unit Head or the Program Director.

  • To supervise campers and to enforce Unit policies within her cabin and in the Unit at all times, and especially when designated "unit duty" (after morning and afternoon activities until meal times, Wednesday morning, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons) or evening duty (9:00pm until midnight.)

  • To be aware of her campers' participation and progress in the cabin group and in activities, and to relate when necessary, any difficulties the camper may have to the Unit Head, Activity Head, Program Director, Nurse or Camp Directors.

  • To write periodic reports on those campers in her cabin, sharing her thoughts about her campers with the Directors.

As an Activity Counselor:

  • To teach or assist in teaching one or more activities, following objectives, progression, procedures, and safety regulations established by the Activity Head and Clearwater Camp.

  • To participate in the maintenance and care of equipment used in her activity as directed by the Activity Head.

  • To assist the Activity Head in making skill, progress, and attitude reports for campers in her activity at least twice during the summer.

  • To supervise activities in which she has some experience and knowledge during periods of "camper free choice time" (after morning and afternoon activities, in the evening, before bed time, Wednesday morning, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.)

As a General Counselor:

  • To assist with regular program and special camp-wide activities as assigned.

  • To act as a hostess at a table in the dining room.

  • If interested, to share trip leadership responsibilities.

  • To be aware that she represents Clearwater Camp on or off the grounds, and that her activities and image be consistent with Clearwater ideals and policies at all times.
