Sailing
at Clearwater
Water safety is most important in our many water-oriented activities and,
therefore, each camper must pass a swimming safety test before she may go out in any boat
without a counselor. She will water-ski when she has passed an additional safety test. This
insures the camper has the skills, strength and confidence to take care of herself in the
water.
Clearwater's
sailing program has 11 boats: one "E" scow, seven "C" scows, two "X's" and two
Sunfish. To be sailed properly, the "X's" and "C's" require greater
skills from the sailors.
Campers are introduced to sailing through an established program wherein the
camper may choose to achieve goals of attaining "crew" status up to the rank of
"skipper". This involves learning, memorizing and utilizing skills to enable the
camper to safely sail. Knots, parts of the boat, sailing strategy, sailboat maintenance,
rowing and other activities associated with sailing are covered in detail by the sailing
instructor.
As campers progress, they may sign up for the Sunday regattas. This provides
an opportunity for all our campers to crew on the sailboats, if they desire, and learn the
competitive sailing skills needed for racing.
Campers who have reached the skill level
required to skipper a sailboat take the tiller during the regattas while staff are out on
the water at all times and within easy reach if help is needed.
The
sailboats of Clearwater Camp are held close to the hearts of many campers. Alumnae often
return to Clearwater during Family Camp and look out over the lake to see their favorite
boat moored at its appointed buoy. The cabins at Clearwater are named for various sailing
terms (Buoy, Dory, Wake, Stern, Tops'l, Port, Starboard, etc.) and many of our songs
reflect our sailing tradition.
But
Clearwater is not just sailing! Our trip program provides new opportunities for campers to
experience and explore the natural world around them.
